Getting Started

The Essential Documents

Whether you left decades ago or recently, returning by force or by choice, starting over in Jamaica can feel overwhelming—but don’t worry, I went through this rediscovery so you don’t have to. Every day is a chance to make changes to create the life you want. Before you can get housing, a job or open a bank account, you need to understand the currency and get an ID.

A Few Things You’ll Always Need

– Passport-Sized Photos
Get at least 10. Most applications require multiple photos, and it’s best to have extras on hand.
– Proof of Address
If you don’t have a bill in your name, you’ll need a notarized letter from the person you live with, make a few copies.
Some applications may require an official stamp or verification from a Justice of the Peace (JP).
– Reliable Notary or Justice of the Peace (JP)
A Justice of the Peace, Minister, Judge, Attorney-at-Law or Medical Doctor. Some documents must be notarized by the same person who notarized your photos. Find a trustworthy JP and stick with them.
– Jamaican Currency for Transactions
Exchange your currency for Jamaican dollars. Carry exact or small bills when making payments—because some people assume you can’t count your change.
– The Ability to Ask Questions Without Losing Your Cool
Government processes can be confusing and inconsistent. Expect vague or conflicting answers, but stay persistent.
– Unlimited Patience
Prepare for long waits, multiple trips, and unexpected hurdles. If you expect efficiency, you’re in the wrong place.
– It’s Best to Visit Main Offices
Nothing will be mailed to you! Wherever you apply is where you have to pick up, unless you specify a different pick up location.

Having these essentials ready will make your transition back to Jamaica much smoother!

Money

Understanding the currency of Jamaica and the value of a dollar.

JMD is the currency used and understanding the true value is essential unless you enjoy paying “tourist prices” for everything. Take your time to understand the exchange rate no matter what country you’re moving or deported from because every dollar counts – literally!

Jamaican Currency: Bills & Coins
Jamaican money comes in both bills and coins, but don’t let the high numbers fool you—it’s not as much as it seems.

Paper Bills: 💵 J$50, J$100, J$500, J$1,000, J$5,000
Coins:🪙 J$1, J$5, J$10, J$20

Exchange Rates: February 2025 (Approximate)
Keep in mind that exchange rates fluctuate. For the most up-to-date rates, Google the exchange rate or download a currency converter app like USD x JMD or similar. The fee’s to exchange may vary depending on where you’re doing the exchange.

$1 USD = $157.50 JMD
£1 GBP = $198.40 JMD
$1 CAD = $109.10 JMD

Example: $10 USD = $1,586.18 JMD, which might buy you two basic grocery items—Jamaican prices remain consistently high in some areas.

Important Currency Tips:
Exchange your money before shopping to get the best rates.
Spend in Jamaican Dollars (JMD) to avoid being short-changed and the currency exchange fees.
Exchange rates affect how much foreign currency you get, but Jamaican prices stay high regardless.

Understanding the value of your money is key to avoiding unnecessary expenses and making the most of your budget in Jamaica!

Tax Registration Number (TRN)

A Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned by the Jamaican government to individuals and entities for tax-related purposes. It is essential for conducting various transactions in Jamaica, such as opening bank accounts, registering vehicles, and accessing government services.

Processed by: Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ)

📍 Main Office:
116 East Street, Kingston Jamaica
There are additional offices across the island

Requirements:
ID OR Passport sized photo notarized or signed by a JP along with Birth Certificate
Application Form (can be filled out at the office).

💰 Fees:
$0 (FREE)

Some of smaller local offices, you may have to wait outside like sheep until they call your number. If you don’t have any other form of ID, take a notarized passport photo with you.

Identification

If you’re returning to Jamaica without any form of ID (deported), getting one should be your first priority. While a passport or driver’s license can be difficult to obtain without prior identification, the new Jamaican National ID (NIDS) is the easiest option. Below is a breakdown of the different types of ID you can apply for, along with the requirements and application process.

Voter’s ID – Long Wait, but Widely Accepted

Processed by: Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ)

Why choose this?

  • Can be used as a national ID
  • Accepted for banking and government services

📍 Main Office:
43 Duke Street, Kingston, Jamaica

Application Process:

  1. Visit an Electoral Office (Find locations here).

  3. A representative will visit your address to verify residency.
  4. Your Voter’s ID is issued after the next voters list is published (end of May or November).

Processing Time: Several months (depending on the electoral cycle)

You can request a Letter of Identity to use as a form of identification until your card is ready, only if you’ve already had a Voters ID previously. The smaller local offices in each Parish will avoid doing this and may tell you there is no such thing (they’re just lazy or clueless). Just reach out to the main EOJ in Kingston or go there. Online it says 3 days to get the letter but they say it takes 2 weeks. Again, expect everything to take longer than quoted.
